It's certainly Waitr's game to lose in the particular small-market segment that it serves. But as it branches out from its core business, it's going to take a ton of time and investment to be a best-in-class service for not just delivery, but loyalty programs and point-of-sale systems and reservations as well.

Turns out regional chains' expansion strategies aren't so different from the their larger counterparts. The secret formula is delivery, rewards, and franchising.

The acquisition will double the size of Waitr's business overnight. In the company's quest to become the top delivery service in the country, this deal certainly helps its case.

It's been a wild ride for Christopher Meaux, the founder of Waitr, a three-year-old delivery service that started trading publicly in November. Waitr focused on launching outside of major urban centers, and the service does two things differently in this space: fully-employed drivers and low restaurant fees.

Waitr didn't go through an initial public offering because of the nature of its acquisition that was announced earlier this year, but Waitr shares are now up for grabs and it'll report quarterly earnings alongside the one other publicly traded food delivery service in the space, Grubhub.

Scaling up is great for the service, but it's not immune to growing pains along the way.

With the influx of money and exposure from the deal, Waitr will be better positioned to compete as Grubhub, DoorDash, and Uber Eats rapidly expand into the second and third tier markets that Waitr previously dominated.
