Big changes are underway in Latin American aviation. After restructuring as a quasi-budget airline, Colombia's Avianca now wants to acquire discount competitor Viva Air in a deal that could give it two-thirds of the Colombian market.

In an industry record, four budget airlines generated more revenue from ancillaries than they did from ticket sales in 2020. More importantly, ancillary revenue grew across all of the largest airlines last year despite the crisis.

Ayenda's Series A is notable for being led by Kaszek, a giant among Latin American venture firms. The industry will be watching to see if Ayenda can apply Oyo's model of bringing brand standards to budget hotels without running up Oyo's large losses.
