We've seen it over and over again by now: Given the vast marketing resources of major players in the hotel booking arena, it is extremely hard for startups to build their brand with consumers. Building a business-to-business company is somewhat easier but Stayful's pivot might have come too late.

Stayful is counting on boutique and independent hotels giving up some control in exchange for free mobile services and incremental revenue. Free has a track record of working although properties will have to consider the tradeoffs.

To attract the attention and loyalty of Millennials today, hotels and booking sites need to communicate relevant hotel and destination content instantaneously and conveniently on mobile.

For travel startups, company culture is more than window-dressing. It can have a lot to do with whether or not you survive to fight another day.
