Piece by piece, private equity firm Warburg Pincus is building Mercator into a rival to Sabre and Amadeus -- two travel technology providers that provide overlapping software and operational services to commercial airlines (and that recently went public after restructurings by buyout experts). Expect the Mercator merger with Accelya to spur an acquisition spree.

Purchasing a brand like Miraval to enter into the wellness space is a smart move on Hyatt's part, as wellness becomes an increasingly global desire among all consumers, especially among the high-end travelers Hyatt has in its sights.

This is a decent exit for the investors in ReviewPro and a wake-up call to a Western hotel industry ignoring China's tech scene. But it is also a validation of ReviewPro's particular approach of giving hotels actionable analytics on guests for sales and marketing, and revenue management -- and not just monitoring TripAdvisor ratings.

A prudent strategy for Airbnb might be to initially partner with an online travel agency in an affiliate relationship so it can access flights for its customers. In that way, Airbnb could test whether its users want to book flights on the site without taking the big risks involved in making a large acquisition, which could always come later.

The bigger question now is what will happen to Rezidor, and how will that impact HNA's other hotel investments in NH Hotels, as well as Hilton and Red Lion Hotels?

With Lola's acquisition of Room 77's metasearch tech, Room 77 essentially becomes a consumer insights and hotel search test lab for Lola. Room 77's original founders have essentially exited the business: Google licensed its tech and hired the bulk of its employees, Expedia acquired Room 77's pioneering room-view tech, TrustYou bought Room 77's Checkmate hotel-messaging app, and now Lola picked up the remaining technology.

Will someone just buy this hotel company that so desperately needs to be bought before year's end?

If Virgin America was not expected to merge with Alaska Airlines, analysts likely would fret about Virgin America's falling unit revenue. But since Virgin America is now in limbo, waiting to see if it can close its merger, it's not clear how much the unit revenue decrease matters.
