No doubt most Wall Street analysts and Hilton shareholders are likely happy about this news. We do, however, have to wonder how Carlson Hotels, which is 100 percent owned by HNA, is taking this recent news.

HNA Group's decision to at least consider selling its stake in NH Hotels shouldn't come as a surprise. It will be interesting to see whether one of the big hotel companies emerges as a potential buyer.

It looks like tighter restrictions on outbound investment are starting to hinder dealmaking at HNA. Although the Rezidor deal may still go through, you've got to wonder what it means for the rest of 2017 and beyond.

As it adapts to its new asset-light strategy, Hilton seems determined to leverage the strength of its ties to HNA, prevent unwanted hotel cancellations, and welcome more competition from an unlikely ally: Airbnb.

HNA Group tried to enter the U.S. online travel agency market through Travana/Janbala and abruptly had a change of heart either because the startup didn't know what it was doing or because of some other dynamic in the opaque world of Chinese investors. Consider this a slight bump in the road.

While Rezidor is still suffering from the impact of terrorism, its outlook is likely to improve if and when it is taken over by Chinese conglomerate HNA Group, which would undoubtedly help it capture a bigger slice of the tourism market.

HNA's influence on Carlson Hotels is already taking hold. What will be even more interesting going forward is how HNA leverages its numerous hospitality investments, including Carlson, NH Hotels, Red Lion Hotels and soon, Hilton Worldwide and, possibly Rezidor.

The bigger question now is what will happen to Rezidor, and how will that impact HNA's other hotel investments in NH Hotels, as well as Hilton and Red Lion Hotels?
