Airports with decent Wi-Fi are becoming more common than those without it. Boingo's new partnership with a major U.S. carrier will hopefully take airport Wi-Fi even further towards a seamless experience.

If airports want to welcome and comfort travelers, that phrase's definition implies more than charging outlets and iPads at gates or restaurants featuring local cuisines. Having a slow Wi-Fi connection isn't an extension of home for many travelers but it's encouraging to see faster speeds will soon become more common.

We don't expect Wi-Fi to be breezing at 35,000 feet but there's no shame in holding airports on the ground accountable for faster speeds at this point and it looks like they've listened to demand.

Seamless access is helpful but it's the secure connection, where available, that offers the greatest advantage.

Boingo Wireless has yet to detail the value of its new contract to power Wi-Fi services at the new World Trade Center complex, but the 20-year deal has to be a big and tall win.

A tiered Wi-Fi service is the best option for catering to a range of travelers who are willing to pay different amounts for a corresponding level of service.

The subway selection is so scant that the advertising promotion will be most effective at airports where travelers will likely encounter a large ad or video prior to accessing the Wi-Fi.

Although New Yorkers will only have access to 200 hotspots, far less than the 4,000 available during Google’s campaign, they will be able to connect on any mobile device, not just Androids.

It's no coincidence that the Google Play-sponsored Wi-Fi will only be available on Android mobile devices, but will free Wi-Fi really be enough incentive to lure iPhone users over to Google?

Users should enjoy the free and discounted services while they can. Once the promotions end, Boingo hopes users will be willing to pay for Wi-Fi in these newly connected locations.
