Long among the world’s most profitable airlines, Allegiant seeks even greater riches with a mix of old tricks and new ideas. Some, in fact, have nothing to do with air service.

Avianca Brasil, the smaller regional cousin of Avianca Colombia, will leave the alliance on September 1. While some regional passengers may notice the lapse in service deeper in Brazil, most international travelers to the country won't notice the vacuum.

The loss of Avianca Brasil won't be huge for the Star Alliance, but for some regional travelers throughout Brazil, its demise will certainly make connections inconvenient.

Despite its well-known name, Avianca Brasil is a lot smaller than most travelers might think. But it's growing and recently started flying to Miami and New York. Expect to see more new long-haul routes soon.
