After failing to merge with Air Canada, and after suffering severe losses during the Covid crisis, the tour operator Transat is on track to be profitable this year. Demand is strong, tour package prices and airfares are high, fuel costs are momentarily subdued, and a newly-arriving Airbus narrowbodies are opening market opportunities. The company expects a strong spring and summer.
Air Canada places the blame for a "grim" 2020 on Covid-19 and what it sees as onerous restrictions from the Canadian government. But it's betting that it can convince the government to replace quarantines with a testing mandate, and maybe even some financial relief for airlines.
