In-flight wi-fi users really love Apple over Android

  • Skift Take
The one troubling fact for Apple: The 5:1 ratio in its favor for 2013 is way down from 30:1 ratio in 2011, mostly due to the meteoric rise of Samsung in this market.

The tech habits of U.S. in-flight wi-fi users should make Apple happy, amidst all the doom and gloom scenarios on its stock price and fortunes recently. In-flight wi-fi provider Gogo has complied some data on the users of its service — which is installed on American, Alaska, US Airways, Delta, Frontier and Virgin America — and come up with numbers that shouldn’t be too surprising, but informative nonetheless:

    • Tablets and smartphones now make up a big 67 percent of the devices used on flights.
    • Very quick rise for tablets, as they are now the most preferred device at 35 percent, followed closely by laptops (33 percent) and smartphones (32 percent).
    • This is the key one: Among all mobile devices being used, 84 percent carry Apple’s iOS operating system while 16 percent carry the Android operating system.
    • On smartphones only, iPhone makes up 73 percent and Android devices make up 26 percent, with Blackberry and Windows based devices each making up less than 1 percent of devices being used in air.
