Updated: International Stadiums Grab the Attention of U.S. Travelers in 2013

Although some stadiums are famous and warrant trips in their own right, the rise in searches was highest for venues that held noteworthy events or were located in talked-about cities.

[Editor’s Note: In response to Skift’s inquiries, Google found that the first three entries of this list were incorrectly entered. The top three trending venues should have been AT&T Park, BB&T Center, and Sleep Train Arena. See new post here. ]

The trending web searches for events venues in 2013 are not what you’d expect from American Google users.

According to Google’s 2013 Zeitgeist, the three venues that saw the biggest increase in queries are a concert hall in Boston, sports arena in Delhi, and an events venue in Poland.

These are the top trending queries for 2013, which Google describes as the searches that had the highest amount of traffic over a period in 2013 as compared to 2012.

We looked into what might have caused the spike in Google queries for the overseas stadiums: Concerts at Boston’s Symphony Hall were cancelled due to the Boston Marathon bombings and then rescheduled in tribute to victims and their families.

The Boston Marathon was the among the top trending searches countrywide in 2013.

Warsaw’s National Stadium hosted several big concerts in 2013 including performances by Beyonce and Paul McCartney. It will also host the UEFA Europa League soccer tournament.

The top ten list also includes more expected U.S. stadiums including the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Verizon Center in D.C., and Madison Square Garden in New York City. The Staples Center was also one of the ten most Instagrammed locations in 2013.

It’s been a big month for social media and search sites sharing information about user behavior. Earlier, Facebook shared the most checked-in travel sights in the U.S. and abroad, Twitter shared its most popular photo posts, and Foursquare shares its most checked into places.

Below is a list the sports stadiums that saw the biggest increase in Google searches in 2013:
