Mobile apps that attempt to bring old world pleasures to high tech travelers

    Technology has clearly changed the way we travel with nearly as much time spent staring down at a screen as up at the sights, but apps, when done well, can help deepen our understanding of a location.

    Europeans rich enough to take the Grand Tour to Italy in the 18th and 19th centuries often liked to be painted with their tourist kit—walking sticks, maps and the occasional globe. The scenery hasn’t changed, but today’s tourists are far more likely to want Wi-Fi than walking sticks, and smartphones and tablets have taken the touring experience well beyond maps. Here’s a look at a few apps with the potential to improve a modern Grand Tour.
