Virgin America Launches In-Flight Netflix Access on Select Routes

It was only a matter of time before Netflix officially took to the skies, and that moment has finally arrived on Virgin America.

Through March 2, 2016, new and existing Netflix members traveling will have free WiFi access to stream TV shows and movies to their mobile devices, tablets or laptops on the Virgin America’s 10 aircraft equipped with ViaSat-powered faster in-flight connections.

“We are strong believers in the increasing ubiquity of WiFi to bring the benefits of Netflix to members wherever they are,” states Bill Holmes, Global Head of Business Development at Netflix, on the company’s blog. “This advances our goal to bring Netflix to members wherever they are and whenever they want. For us, the future of streaming technology is about delivering an on-demand service that takes advantage of the expansion of WiFi to public places, parks and now airplanes.”

To mark the launch, Virgin America has also painted its 10 #NetflixOnboard aircraft with a special House of Cards and Netflix livery.

Virgin America’s switch to high-speed ViaSat connections opened up new possibilities for the airline to offer passengers an improved experience and improve revenues. Streaming content at these speeds is just the beginning.
