Promotion From Russian Airline Gives Away Points When Planes Fly Overhead

This is a clever idea from S7, although app users may quickly tire of the push notifications in exchange for the relatively few miles they receive.

Russian airline S7 has come up with a rather novel way to promote use of its apps and give users points redeemable through its loyalty program.

With the help of advertising agency Leo Burnett Moscow, S7 launches the Catch a Plane app, which gives customers the opportunity to earn some of the 5 million miles released into the marketplace for free.

Users that download the iOS app receive free miles every time a S7 plane flies over them. They can then share the news on Facebook or Twitter for one additional mile.

The airline is also using the app as an opportunity to share promotions. Users will receive push notifications detailing special offers about the specific plane that flies overhead.

Flyers will be able to use the miles on S7 and other oneworld alliance airlines.
