Indian railways launches free Wi-Fi, but will likely quickly be overwhelmed

  • Skift Take
This being India, the network will likely be overwhelmed by usage, primarily mobile device usage. But then, how different would that crawl be from Amtrak or Bolt Bus wi-fi here?

The Indian Railways is launching free Wi-Fi based Internet services today starting with the New Delhi- Howrah Rajdhani. Fifty other trains are expected to be connected this year.

Initially, 4 Mbps download bandwidth and 512 Kbps upload bandwidth is earmarked…However, individual users may get much lower speeds because this bandwidth will be shared by all the passengers on the train….Video downloads and gaming would be last in priority of download, if there is a crunch on the bandwidth availability.

Here’s the tech and the company behind this installation.
