Kayak reaps $3.5 million in mobile revenue in Q3 as overall revenues rise 30 percent

  • Skift Take
With 3.1 million downloads of its mobile apps in the third quarter (bringing total to over 20 million overall), and increasing prowess in monetizing queries from smartphones, Kayak is certainly a leader in mobile within the travel industry.

It may get lost in the major news of the day — Priceline has agreed to acquire Kayak — but the travel metasearch company’s efforts in making a little money off mobile are beginning to pay off.

In reporting its third quarter results today, Kayak indicated that its mobile RPM (revenue per thousand queries) increased 63% in the third quarter to $62 compared with the third quarter of 2011.

Based on the 56 million mobile queries, an 87% jump, which Kayak handled during the quarter, that means Kayak attracted nearly $3.5 million in revenue from mobile revenue, and that’s a significant number.

It’s a small chunk of the overall $78.6 million in revenue Kayak took in during the quarter, but the mobile portion is growing.

    Overall Q3 numbers:

    • Revenue: $78.6 million, a 29% increase from $61.2 million in the third quarter of 2011.
    • Adjusted EBITDA: $21.1 million, a 19% increase from $17.7 million in the third quarter of 2011.
    • Net Income: $8.0 million, a 14% increase from $7.0 million in the third quarter of 2011.
    • International: Revenue from non-US geographies was $17.3 million for the third quarter 2012, a 40% increase from $12.3 million in the third quarter of 2011.
    • Queries growth: 302 million queries across its sites and mobile applications, a 31% increase from 231 million queries in the third quarter of 2011.
    • App downloads: Downloaded 3.1 million times, a 95% increase compared to the third quarter of 2011.
