Las Vegas Is One of the First Destinations Advertising to the LGBT Community on National TV

Same-sex couples are some of the most sought after tourists today with destinations quickly realizing the increase in visitors and spending that results from proving to be an open and accepting vacation spot.

For the first time, Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority is taking its “What Happens Here, Stays Here” campaign and creating a spot that’s exclusively dedicated to the LGBT community.

The new TV commercial “The Check In” shows a man arrive at his Vegas hotel and consider swapping his lady friend for an attractive man he meets at the check-in desk. The hotel receptionist’s friendly welcoming to the male duo sparks the idea and simultaneously highlights Las Vegas’ open atmosphere.

Las Vegas’s tourism authority sees the campaign’s message of acceptance as aligning perfectly with its broader message of adult freedom.

“The addition of an LGBT spot to the ‘What Happens Here’ campaign was a natural next step,” said Cathy Tull, LVCVA senior vice president of marketing.

“Las Vegas’ campaigns are based on adult freedom and encouraging visitors to experience that freedom first hand.”

Mexico, Ottawa, San Francisco, and many other destinations also target LGBT travelers with information-specific sites and welcoming ad campaigns. Visit Philly, in particular, ran two TV spots on national and regional TV networks in 2004 and 2013.

Las Vegas’ campaign will run on several well-known national TV networks, including Bravo TV, E! Entertainment Television and Logo TV.
