Drones Deliver Surprise Plane Tickets to AirBaltic’s Facebook Fans

  • Skift Take
AirBaltic beat Amazon to the drone delivery stunt and likely kicked off the first of many marketing ploys to involve the unmanned machines.

Latvian airline airBaltic celebrated reaching 100,000 “Likes” on Facebook by surprising selected customer with a free flight.

Tickets were delivered by drones that appeared outside the windows of selected customers. The machines flashed an image alerting the shocked travelers of their prize.

The airline’s 100,000 “Likes” pales in comparison to top-ranking KLM‘s and Southwest‘s more than 4 million fans. But the airline says it has plenty to celebrating as it’s the first Baltic brand to reach 100,000 Facebook fans.

According to Skift’s competitive intelligence platform SkiftIQ, airBaltic ranks 79th in terms of Facebook “Likes” for airlines. The airline is gaining fans quickly, approximately 49 “Likes” per day, and posts one update a day.
