Mexico and Puerto Rico now have direct flights for first time in over a decade

There’s no sensible reason a passenger from San Juan can’t get straight to Mexico without a stopover in the 50 states or another island.

Officials in Puerto Rico say the U.S. territory is welcoming direct flights from Mexico for the first time in 13 years.

Port Authority Director Victor Suarez says the first Puerto Rico-bound flight by Mexican-owned Interjet is scheduled to arrive Tuesday night. A second flight is scheduled for May 17.

Suarez said the promotional flights would soon operate on a more regular schedule.

There haven’t been direct flights between Puerto Rico and Mexico since 2000. Those flights were with Mexicana airlines which has since ceased operations.
