The U.S. Department of State issued an official travel alert in regard to “the continuing possibility of political and social unrest, incidents of which have led to recent violence” in Egypt.
The statement referred to political unrest, which intensified in anticipation of the country’s constitutional referendum in December 2012 and may also intensify with the approach of the 2013 anniversary of Egypt’s January 25 Revolution of 2011.
It further states that there have been no direct attacks on U.S. citizens in spite of the fact that, in isolated instances, Westerners and U.S. citizens have been caught in the middle of clashes and demonstrations.
