Majority of Americans Would Prefer Relatives Stay Somewhere Else This Holiday Season

  • Skift Take
After too many embarrassing conversations with their in-laws, Americans want a breather from them when it’s time for lights out.

Americans welcoming their relatives for holiday visits this week will do so with open arms, but they don’t want the in-laws and cousins spending the night in their homes.

More than half (54%) of Americans said they prefer visiting relatives to book an accommodation rather than have them stay in their homes, Hotels.com 2014 Winter Holiday Travel Survey found. The survey also showed those traveling within the U.S. for the holidays are more likely to stay in a hotel (43%) than lodging with family or relatives (16%).

About 58% of Americans indicated they’ll be traveling within the U.S. this holiday season.

The survey also found that nine out of 10 Americans say they’d give up all of their holiday presents to go on a dream vacation during the holidays.

The survey’s 8,722 respondents hail from 28 countries in Europe, North America, South America and the Middle East. The survey was conducted via email to Hotels.com newsletter subscribers from Nov. 1 to Nov. 25, 2014.

Below is a list of survey respondents’ top wish list destinations:
