Honeymooners That Travel the Farthest for Their Honeymoons, According to Facebook

South Koreans and Italians travel farther than newlyweds from any other country for the honeymoons, according to check-in data accumulated by Facebook.

These lovebirds travel a median distance between 3,500 and 4,000 miles for a honeymoon — roughly the distance from Seoul to Brisbane, Australia, or Milan to New York City.

Facebook measured honeymoon check-ins based on couples on who posted a marriage event on Facebook in 2014 and checked into a location 20 miles away from their home location within two weeks of their marriage date.

It’s interesting to note that six of the ten farthest traveling nationalities are based in Asia or the Middle East.

Although these countries including Qatar, Singapore and Hong Kong are small, there are a breadth of new countries nearby to choose from. Their long-distance travel suggests newlyweds are looking to experience a new culture in addition to a pleasant setting.

The distance traveled by Americans, 650 miles, was about average in comparison to other countries — roughly the distance between New York to Chicago or San Diego to Albuquerque.

A small number of couples, about 100, checked into a place greater than 12,000 miles away from home for their honeymoon. In many cases, this was couples living in Spain who traveled to New Zealand and Peruvians who traveled to Thailand.

Hawaii Dominates

Hawaii is the most popular honeymoon destination in the world with tourists coming from a few hundred to a few thousand miles away to celebrate their nuptials surrounded by sand and sun, according to the data.

Hawaiian towns account for five of the ten most popular U.S. destinations among foreign and American honeymooners. The top Hawaiian destinations included Lahaina, Maui; Līhuʻe, Kaua’i; Poʻipū, Kaua’i; and Kīhei, Maui.

In addition to these, the top U.S. destinations for all international and U.S. couples were Las Vegas; Key West, Florida; Gatlinburg, Tenneesee; New York City; and Lake Buena Vista, Florida.
