Philly is the East Coast’s gaming hub on the rise

  • Skift Take
Philadelphia’s rise has come at the expense of it’s shore-bound neighbor Atlantic City. But while Philly may not have the boardwalk pedigree, it has a mix of activities and a proximity to major cities that it’s coastal rival can’t match.

In the last decade—the last six years, really—the City of Brotherly Love has established itself as one of the fastest-growing gambling areas in the country, adding three casinos in the immediate area and two just a short drive away.

Together, since 2006, these facilities have helped make Pennsylvania the No. 2 gambling market in the country, behind only Las Vegas.

Experts say convenience has driven this burst…with high gas prices and the recent devastation that Superstorm Sandy wreaked on Atlantic City, many Philly-area gamblers are just opting to play closer to home.
