Google Maps app for iPhone is a big deal for Zagat

Google’s local services got a big boost last week, not just from the Maps product but from a refreshed Google + and further integration of white-labeled Frommer’s content.

Before ordering Thai, Italian or Cuban food for dinner, New Yorkers must choose between Yelp, UrbanSpoon and Zagat for restaurant reviews. The Google Maps app for iOS released last week could give Zagat a leg up on that competition.

New Yorkers had wondered how the publisher of pithy restaurant reviews, bound in slender volumes, would emerge as a digital company after Google bought the taste-purveyor in September 2011 from founders Tim and Nina Zagat.

Last week, they got a fuller answer. Google released its much-anticipated map app for iPhones. Among the prominent new features are Zagat reviews that allow diners to search for restaurants as easy as they arrange subway travel.
