Say bonjour to Air Canada’s Rouge, the world’s newest airline

    Air Canada holds the spot for top business airline in the country, but it’s new budget option is the legacy carrier’s attempt to compete with more budget airlines like WestJet.

    Air Canada Rouge will be among the newest airlines taking to the skies this summer. The name and the design of the new low-cost carrier was unveiled today. Flights are scheduled to begin on July 1, 2013.

    Rouge is a “leisure airline” and its launch is part of Air Canada’s efforts to grow its leisure sector. The carrier is part of a new leisure group that is also comprised of Air Canada Vacations. Air Canada Rouge will fly to new and existing leisure destinations within Canada, Europe, and the Caribbean.

    The small fleet will start with just two Boeing 767s, but additional aircraft will be transferred from Air Canada will be added as it receives delivery on new Boeing 787s.

    Similar to Air Canada, Rouge flyers will pick from several tiered airfares – Rouge Plus and Premium Rouge.
