Revisions to Argentina’s holiday calendar boosted domestic tourism in 2012

Citizens are inadvertently encouraged to take advantage of long weekends with short trips that boost the local economy several times during the year. But like much of the Argentine economy, it’s a cheap trick that’ll hurt them in the end.

The rearrangement of the holidays calendar in Argentina has allowed an increase of 43 percent compared to 2011 in the movement of national tourists across the country, said sources of the sector.

The arrivals to different locations during the 11 long weekends this year would total 11.1 million, said Tourism Minister, Enrique Meyer. The holidays calendar allows a better distribution of the demand over the year, as well as the income that generates the activity across the country, he said.
