Who said in-flight entertainment is dead? Singapore signs $400 million deal with Panasonic

  • Skift Take
Like traditional TV against online video, looks like in-flight entertainment systems still have some life in them, never mind all the iPads passengers can now use on the flights.

Singapore Airlines has signed a $400 million agreement with Panasonic Avionics to equip more than 40 of the airline’s new aircraft with inflight entertainment and communications systems…the new systems will be able to provide broadband internet services, live television, touch-screen handsets and social networking functions.

This follows a $50 million investment by Singapore Airlines into its inflight wireless internet and mobile data services announced last week.

From Panasonic’s release: The eX3 system is Panasonic’s most advanced in-flight entertainment and communications (IFEC) system which will offer the latest video screen technology and touch-screen handsets in all classes of travel, powering the Airline’s award-winning KrisWorld entertainment system. Customers will experience higher levels of personalisation with KrisWorld providing intelligent content recommendations based on passenger rating and preferences. Customers can expect the latest games and applications found on the world’s most popular tablet and mobile devices, an e-Library containing newspapers and magazines, social networking functions, as well as an innovative new touch-screen graphical user interface.
