Disney Tries to Make River Cruises Younger With New AmaWaterways Deal

  • Skift Take
Disney sets itself apart in the growing river cruise sector with a product tailored specifically to families and its entrance could spark other companies to integrate their own family-first experiences.

Disney’s guided group travel business Adventures by Disney is entering the growing river cruise sector. Through a partnership with AmaWaterways, Adventures by Disney will offer four sailings in Germany, Austria, Slovakia, and Hungary starting in summer of 2016.

Adventures by Disney’s own guides will join AmaWaterways on the trips, helping to differentiate Disney’s itinerary from AmaWaterway’s standard journey.

River cruising’s largest customer base is traditionally 55+ years old and most river cruise companies tailor the product experience with that in mind. Adventures by Disney is looking to break that mold in part by using one of AmaWaterway’s new ships that is being built with families in mind.

There will be connecting staterooms and suites that accommodate three- and four-person families. Public areas are also being rethought to tailor to activities like karaoke, video games, and movies.
