European Train Tickets Make Their Way Onto Smartwatches

  • Skift Take
Travel contains some of the most consumer-friendly use cases for wearable technology and the industry will quickly adapt to the new platforms once demand is evident.

Although smartwatches are being heralded as the next generation of wearable technology, their nascent adoption is still gaining speed.

Ambitious airlines and hotels are starting to look at the devices as a new platform for interfacing with customers and improving the brand experience. Others like Japan Airlines are taking a different approach and using the new tech to track and improve the efficiency of its gate agents.

Now train travelers can get in on the action.

The French train ticket booking engine Capitaine Train released an app last month for Android Wear technology. Travelers can book tickets for routes in France and nearby countries on operators including TGV and Eurostar via the site.

The smartwatch app will notify users 20 minutes before their train departure and display relevant information, including assigned seats and the e-ticket barcode. Actual purchases are not available via the smartwatch technology.

Samsung Gear Live and the LG G Watch are the only smartwatches to use Android Wear technology at this time.
