Google Data Show U.S. Staycations Rising This Summer

  • Skift Take
Despite an international increase in travel, some consumers are still looking for good deals and affordable escapes that are often only possible in their backyards.

Staycations are more than just a buzzword made up by the travel media for click-worthy headlines.

According to Google data, searches for “staycations” peak every year during July, and searches are already 10 percent higher this year than in 2013.

The most searched-for destinations by residents in six major U.S. cities are the cities in which they live. The second most popular searches are for destinations located a few hours’ drive away: That’s Atlantic City for New Yorkers or Savannah for Atlantans.

This staycation trend is happening while there is also a global increase in international travel, bolstered by an improving economy and greater consumer confidence.
