After five years of trying, Virgin America finally flying out of Newark

    Updated below: Virgin America, in the midst of  overall pessimism about its future and cutting its overall capacity in Q1 of next year, is finally getting a breakthrough it may need to stay competitive in the U.S. market: it is headed to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) after five years of trying to break in.

    The decision was made at Dec 6th board meeting of Port Authority of NY & NJ, and we’ve embedded the relevant portions of that meeting PDF report:

    No official VA announcement has been made yet, but VirginAmerica.com site is already allowing users to book flights out of Newark starting April 2 2013 (the screenshot above), with three daily flights to Los Angeles and San Francisco. Updated: the official release is out now, here.

    The gates being used by VA will be 30,31 and 32, as the documents below show.

     

    Updated: Right now VA is offering introductory rates on both routes for only $149 each way in economy and are available almost every day in April, reports Upgrd
