Carpooling.com gets $10 million from Daimler to expand into the U.S.

    Car sharing services face their biggest challenges from gaining legitimacy from wary consumers as well as major players, such as the insurance industry. Backing from a car manufacturer goes a long way towards improving the odds on both of those.

    Planes, trains, buses and automobiles will be linked, if the latest plans of two ride-sharing services, Carpooling.com and Zimride, work out.Carpooling.com, which helps more than a million passengers a month find shared rides in Europe, has secured an estimated $10 million investment from the German automaker Daimler to expand to the United States before 2013.
