Post-earthquake damage in Christchurch is centered around the central business district rather than the areas outside of the city that attract outdoor enthusiasts and travelers on motorvan holidays
New Zealand tourism bosses are taking issue with an Australian government warning against travel to earthquake-damaged Christchurch, which is the same as warnings given to those heading to East Timor, Rwanda or Iran.
“You should exercise a high degree of caution in Christchurch and Lyttelton at this time because of damage to buildings, public infrastructure, and essential services caused by the earthquake,” the www.smartraveller.gov.au website operated by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs says.
