American Airlines-US Airways merger: Little route benefit, Boyd Group says

  • Skift Take
The pairing of the two airlines would chiefly benefit American on the BOS-DCA and MCO-PHL routes, Boyd Group claims, and that’s hardly enough to base a mega-merger on.

In a Monday morning report, the Boyd Group ran its analysis of the markets of potential merger partners American Airlines and US Airways, and came to this conclusion:

“Move along, folks. Nothing much to see here. The overlap between these carriers is underwhelming. In none of the top 25 markets does this merger change market share materially. And in smaller US Airways markets, the additional on-line access to the AA system would tend to be consumer-positive.”

Click here for the Boyd Group’s look at the top 25 markets and the market shares in those by US Airways and American. What you’ll see is that if one is big in a market, the other has minimal presence.
