Cruise passengers put in rocky limbo by Sandy finally touch ground in Boston

  • Skift Take
It will be interesting to see whether passengers choose to stay on board until they can return to New York. Now that the waves have subsided, a free hotel in Boston Harbor doesn’t sound like a bad idea.

Hundreds of cruise ship passengers who were stuck riding out superstorm Sandy at sea have docked in Boston because of a New York port closure.

Authorities say two cruise ships already diverted to Boston and another two cruise ships are expected by Friday.

The Massachusetts Port Authority says it’s the first time since the Sept. 11th attacks that multiple cruise ships that should have gone to New York have come to Boston.

Passengers getting off the ship Norwegian Gem shared stories Wednesday of riding out the storm as 40- and 50-foot waves rocked the vessel.

Norwegian officials gave passengers the choice of ending their trip in Boston, or continuing on until the vessel can return to New York.

The cruise ship Caribbean Princess is also in Boston, after not making it from New York to Bermuda.
