Skift Take

What can Airbnb learn from hotels and what can hotels learn from Airbnb? Watch this video to find out.

During the Skift Global Forum in New York City in September — our biggest gathering yet — if there were one word that we wish we earned money for every time it was uttered on stage it would have been “Airbnb.”

Since its inception in 2008, Airbnb has been the very definition of a disruptor, trendsetter, and pioneer, making it one of the most fascinating travel brands to follow over the years. What started as a simple website has now transformed itself into a company valued at $30 billion, and one that’s had to balance its role as a tech platform with that of a hospitality provider and, soon, a tours and activities facilitator.

So when Chip Conley, a seasoned hotelier in his own right (he founded Joie de Vivre Hotels in 1987), walked onto the Skift Global Forum stage on the second day of our conference, it’s not an understatement to say that all eyes and ears were laser focused on what he had to say.

Speaking to Skift Co-Founder and Editor-in-Chief Jason Clampet, Conley, who serves as Airbnb’s global head of hospitality and strategy, spoke specifically about how travelers’ desires and expectations have changed, and how companies, whether they be hotels or home sharing platforms like Airbnb, have been forced to evolve their definitions of what true hospitality really is.
