Skift Take

Concise, no-nonsense insights delivered straight to your inbox — that has been the promise of Daily Lodging Report for 25+ years, and we at Skift will continue to deliver on that.

Surprise, surprise, travel is back, and back it is with a vengeance in countries that are opening up post-vaccination. As the industry is on a fast recovery back, so are our ambitions at Skift.

In our continued quest to be the most influential media and intelligence source in the global business of travel, we are bringing the iconic hotel industry newsletter, the 26-year old Daily Lodging Report, into the Skift family.

Started by Alan Woinski, a well-known gaming and lodging industry analyst, on the night his first son was born (!), the Daily Lodging Report has since been a subscription-required, email-only newsletter that is read by anyone and everyone in the hotel investor, owner and operator space. And with two separate regional versions, it covers everything from North America to Asia Pacific. The report itself boils industry news down to a quick, easily-digestible daily digest, known for keeping readers up-to-date in an efficient, effective way.

Don’t just take our word for its influence, though. Here is what Geoff Ballotti, CEO of Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, had to say when I emailed him asking his views on DLR: “Not a day has gone by in the past 20+ years of my career where I haven’t read every word of Daily Lodging Report, as have just about everyone in my world I talk to.”

This is Skift’s third acquisition in three years, following the Airline Weekly deal in fall of 2018 and EventMB in fall 2019. With the subscription side of our business growing, we are looking forward to expanding DLR’s preexisting editorial and subscriber base — and the potential for building other ancillary businesses on top of it. We’re confident that the combination of Skift’s travel industry coverage, plus DLR’s long history of hospitality news, will a clear winner for subscribers.

Along with this acquisition, Alan Woinksi and Kim Santangelo-Woinski will be joining Skift as Editors of DLR. The two also run the Gaming Industry Daily Report, which they will continue separate from Skift.

I am excited to welcome Alan and Kim to Skift, and along with them promise to continue delivering the newsletter’s trademark concise, no-nonsense insights to DLR subscribers.

Tomorrow, Alan and I will be discussing this transaction, and what it means for DLR and Skift subscribers and the rest of the global hotel industry, at the Skift Hospitality and Marketing Summit online. I invite you to follow the link so you can hear what we have to say as well as top executives from MGM Resorts, JLL, Best Western, IHG, Ennismore, Expedia, Hilton, and others. You can join this online summit, as a thank you to you from us and Skift, use the code SKIFTDLR when you register to get 25 percent off the ticket price now.
