Boeing Co. delivered more planes than Airbus Group NV in 2014 to hold on to the title of world’s biggest planemaker for a third straight year as the U.S. company accelerated production of its newest 787 Dreamliner.
Airbus, where deliveries of the new A350 began only last month, handed over 629 planes in the year, the Toulouse, France- based company said today. While that set a new record, it fell short of the 723 produced by Boeing, which was also an all-time high. The European company came out ahead on orders, signing a net 1,456 contracts versus 1,432 for its rival.
Both planemakers continue to pump out single-aisle planes to satisfy demand from both network and low-cost carriers, while ramping up production of a new generation of wide-body jets. Boeing’s lead is attributable to higher build rates on the Dreamliner that stand at more than 10 a month, a level that the A350 — which saw its first handover to Qatar Airways Ltd. on Dec. 22 — won’t match until 2018.
Airbus, which has seen production rise in each of the past 13 years, delivered 490 single-aisle A320-series planes, 108 A330 wide-bodies, 30 A380s superjumbos and the single A350.
The order tally was Airbus’s second-best ever and involved 67 clients buying 1,321 single-aisle jets and 135 wide-bodies. The intake was boosted by the A330neo, an upgraded model with new engines that scooped 120 orders in 2014 after getting the go-ahead at the Farnborough Air Show in July.
While Airbus secured a deal for 20 A380s from lessor Amedeo, 2014 marked the first year in which the double-decker failed to win an airline order, while the Amedeo examples have yet to be placed with customers.
The planemaker’s total backlog now stands at an industry record of 6,386 jetliners, worth $919.3 billion at list prices, it said. Boeing, which reported annual totals on Jan. 6, has 5,789 outstanding orders, a record for the U.S. company.
