This is a smart move by Zipcar and Avis Budget as it will give travelers new choices in their rentals at airport locations. It should also attract customers to Zipcar who may not have considered car-sharing until now.

Just days after officially becoming part of Avis Budget Group following the closing of the acquisition, Zipcar was showing off the advantages of the affiliation as it expanded to its first airports. You can now find Zipcars at JFK, LaGuardia and Newark airports and company is using spaces at Avis Car Rental pick-up facilities at each airport.

The parking spaces are branded Zipcar, and president Mark Norman says the plan is to expand to additional airport locations during 2013.

This is a big change for Zipcar, which traditionally has located its spaces in urban areas and universities.

It can also help Avis Budget during peak periods.

There aren’t a massive number of Zipcars at the airport locations — four at Newark, four at LaGuardia, and five at JFK, Zipcar states. The fleet includes Honda Civics and Nissan Sentras, and rental rates ranges from $12 per hour to $89 per day.

“The availability of Zipcars at airports will provide increased options for members who may not need a full day rental car, or for those who need to travel somewhere not easily accessible by public transit,” Norman says. “We believe this is the first in many new offerings that will enhance the value of Zipcar membership that we can provide thanks to the support of the Avis Budget Group.”
