The civil war is over, but Western government travel warnings are still there. If there's going to be a recovery, tourism authorities need to focus their energy on getting those lifted. That's going to require repeated messaging that the war is over.

The travel alerts and warnings which used to be simply posted online, are a lot more instant with Twitter. Savvy foreign offices like the ones in U.S. and UK are taking over a lot of minor functions that embassies did in the past.

Twitter has already proven to be a lifeline for people caught in the middle of a disaster. Limiting alerts to public organizations may help curb the spread of misinformation, but the alerts will still only reach Twitter users who sign up for the service -- a relatively small number of citizens.

Here's some more advice: Don't be a jerk, try to blend in, don't take photos obnoxiously of every local you see, and contact your embassy immediately if you are arrested.

Violence is clearly bad for tourism, but a travel warning isn’t an immediate harbinger for a visitor drop. The U.S. warns travelers against visiting Israel with little impact and the warnings are never mandatory blocks.
