These are very early days for online travel in China, where there is keen competition and shifting dynamics. The country's leading general search engine, Baidu, is the majority shareholder in Qunar, which is starting to give Ctrip a run for its money.
People scoffed at travel metasearch for years, denigrating its viability as a business model. But as travel inspiration and social travel sites have come and gone, travel metasearch has kept on expanding, as Qunar's plans highlight.
