Australia Tourism’s ‘Chief Funster’ Is No Longer Officially Having Fun

Andrew Smith, once of Yorba Linda, had one of the best jobs in the world.

At least that’s what Australia’s tourism agency told about 124,000 applicants who had applied for the position of chief funster.

Smith, 26, got the gig and was charged with promoting New South Wales as a tourist destination for its festivals, special events, landscape and breweries.

Smith admitted he has no idea what he’ll do now after winning a one-year contract and a $100,000 stipend from Australia amid international media attention.

“I’m ready for the next thing,” Smith said.

Since departing the chief funster position in recent weeks, Smith has been housesitting for the owner of Little Creatures Brewery in Perth, Australia.

He’s determined to continue telling stories through video, photos, social media and blogs like he did as chief funster; what the subject will be in the future is unclear. Smith enjoys telling stories.

Smith isn’t alone in his Australian travels. His new wife, Rachel, is down under and selling her artwork. He thoroughly enjoys marriage.

“It hasn’t been hard, even though it seems like it has the potential to be,” Smith said. “I’m more worried about settling into a routine kind of life.”

Smith lived in Costa Mesa before moving to Australia; he lived in Yorba Linda for a time while attending Esperanza High School. He also graduated from Cal State Fullerton with a finance degree.
