5 Most Expensive U.S. Cities for Car Rentals

Renting a car in Las Vegas is cheaper than just about any other top destination in the nation, according to a survey from CheapCarRental.net.

The website, in a survey released last week, compared car rental rates for 50 popular destination cities in the United States via Kayak, a travel metasearch engine.

Las Vegas came in at No. 47, with an average daily rate of $27 — nearly two-thirds less than the $76 cost to rent a car in New York, the most expensive destination, according to the survey. Conversely, the price in Las Vegas was $2 a day more than the least expensive city in the survey, Orlando, Fla.

The survey spanned from June 2013 to May 2014, according to CheapCarRental.net. Each city’s main airport was chosen as the pick-up and drop-off location. The survey established the price of a five-day rental about one to two weeks prior to the pick-up date.

The website noted costs tended to fluctuate heavily for some destinations. For example, on some days during the offseason in Miami (No. 44), travelers could find a car for less than $20 per day; during the peak season the cost was $60 or more. In New York, the price ranged from around $60 to $110 per day.

The five most expensive cities for car rentals:

  2. Detroit $69
  3. Memphis $67
  4. Baltimore $65
  5. New Orleans $63

And the five least expensive:

  1. San Diego $28
  2. Las Vegas $27
  3. Fort Lauderdale $26
  4. Tampa $26
  5. Orlando $25
