Startups such as Rome2rio are doing some heavy lifting in travel planning, offering door to door ground transportation options to complete the entire journey. It is an extremely fragmented market, and one that larger online travel agencies have chosen to ignore in favor of the proverbial long-hanging fruit such as flights, hotels and car rentals. The challenge for Rome2rio and others is to see if they can scale the business to make it sustainable.

Analysts say that Rome2rio, and services like it, are the next frontier of travel planning, going beyond the standard web searches for flights and hotels for travelers overwhelmed by online searches.
