Thailand Considering $15 Tourist Entry Fee To Spur ‘Quality Tourists’
The minister is right on one thing: the minor fee won’t deter tourists from coming to one of the most popular tourism countries on the planet. What’s he’s wrong on is hoping this would improve the quality of tourists, it won’t.
Excerpt from Bangkok Post
The Thailand government is considering a plan to charge foreigners a 500-baht (about US $16) entry fee from January next year.
The [authorities] expected the extra charge would lead to an increase in the quality of tourists entering Thailand. The new entry charge could take effect from around mid-Jan next year…Foreigners who stay in Thailand no more than three days would be charged 30 baht a day, while those who stay more than three days would have to pay 500 baht
“Now is the time for us to have quality tourists. It’s not as if inbound tour operators won’t organise tours for foreign tourists to come to the country because of the entry fees,” Public Health Minister Pradit Sintavanarong said.
