TripAdvisor Invites Small Hotels But Can They Afford To Compete?
TripAdvisor is offering technology that would enable B&Bs and small hotels to participate in its hotel metasearch. Pictured is the House of Another Tyme Bed and Breakfast, a remodeled Victorian-style inn with three guest rooms in Arroyo Grande, California, which isn't necessarily a participant. TripAdvisor is actually doing something for the lodging industry that no one else has done: inviting small independents and B&Bs to participate in hotel metasearch. But they will really have to be strategic about where and how they participate because it will be almost impossible to compete head-to-head against major chain hotels like Marriott, InterContinental and Hilton.

More than 210 Internet booking engines have signed up in anticipation of what TripAdvisor calls its game-changing online platform, TripAdvisor Connect, scheduled to launch later this year.
Initial commitment from Internet booking engines means that more than 135,000 hotels and B&Bs worldwide will be able to participate in Hotel Price Comparison [metasearch] on TripAdvisor. Initial commitment for TripAdvisor Connect has exceeded company expectations, with booking engines from 48 countries already on board.
