Logan Airport’s new rental car center and bus system are the perfect examples of infrastructure improvements that result in real change for frequent fliers. This, in comparison to startups that try to illegally tap airports for a new customer base.
People flying into Logan International Airport will now need to go to just one place to rent a car.
The Massachusetts Port Authority unveiled its new $310 million rental car center on Tuesday. Nine rental companies will operate out of the 120,000-square-foot customer service center and four-level garage.
The new rental car center is being introduced with a new unified bus shuttle system at Logan. Starting Wednesday, diesel rental car buses will be eliminated from the airport’s roadway, Massport said. As a result, the airport’s bus traffic will drop from 100 diesel buses per hour to 28 hybrid buses per hour.
The change is expected to decrease shuttle bus vehicle miles at the airport by 70 percent, with an accompanying 35 percent decrease in airport-related emissions, the agency said.
Massport says the new bus system will also reduce curbside congestion because departing passenger will be dropped off on the upper level of their airline’s terminal, where they can go directly to ticketing, baggage drop and security.
Meanwhile, arriving passengers will be picked up on their terminal’s lower level, for transport to the rental car center or airport subway stop.
State Department of Transportation chief Richard Davey said building a safe, healthy and sustainable transportation system is a Patrick administration priority.
“This new Rental Car Center and fuel efficient clean hybrid buses fit perfectly with those broader environmental goals,” he said.
