Amtrak Just Had its Best Month in History

Amtrak’s ridership numbers were bolstered by deals with states that have agreed to subsidize riders’ trips. So despite the record ridership, the mark is not likely to mollify Congressional budget hawks when Amtrak is up for its budget request in the Fall.

More passengers rode Amtrak trains in July than during any other month in the 32-year history of the railway, the company announced on Wednesday.
Amtrak said 2.9 million passengers boarded its trains last month, up from 2.7 million in July 2012 The previous single-month ridership record for Amtrak was 2.8 million riders in March 2013.
